Ninth grade Vanitas Drawings
Ninth Grade Vanitas Project
The 9th grade RMS students will be creating Vanitas with charcoal. Vanitas are symbolic still life paintings or drawings. The students may bring in items to draw that they feel have specific meaning to them. The guidelines for this assignment are:
The object of this lesson is to create a still life composition using objects that resemble the basic forms of a sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. For example, apples-sphere, glass-cylinder, book-cube, acorn squash-cone. Students will be graded on composition, use of value, and accuracy of drawn objects. The assignment is worth 45 points. Ten of the points are from the sketches of the basic forms and a sketch of the composition and an additional ten points are for a short paragraph describing the symbolism of your chosen objects.
Please do not bring in any valuables. RMS is not responsible for the safety of these items. Also, do not bring in any items that are inappropriate such as pictures, religious items, weapons, alcohol, drugs, and drug paraphernalia or refer to said items. The students will be working on this project for about two weeks so the items must stay in the art room for that time.
Appropriate items may include: Fruits, flowers, glasses, musical instruments, sport items, mirrors, globes, gazing balls, dice, cards, books, candle holders with unlit candles, clocks, watches, etc. Ultimately, the teacher will decide what objects can be used in the Vanitas still life drawing.
Items should be brought into the art room by Wednesday, October 14th . Bring the items in before school to be stored in the art room. If any student is unable to bring in objects, the art room will supply objects for their drawing.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me via email or telephone before or after school. Email ebaar@ycs.wednet.edu or 458-1100 ext. 11420

Student Show at Olympia Arts Walk
RMS student artists will be showing their recent Modified Blind Contour drawings at the Olympia Arts Walk this Friday, Oct. 2nd. Be sure to check out the fantastic art work.
Starting Sketchbooks on Tuesday
On Tuesday, Sept. 29th we will be making Marbleized paper for the sketchbook cover. Marbleizing paper is a technique in which artists float paint on top of a starchy water solution called sizing. Once the paint is floating the artists may use combs or bamboo sticks to create swirled patterns. When the desired pattern is achieved the artist then dips a sheet of paper onto the painted water surface to transfer the paint on to the paper.
Here are some examples of marbleized paper.

Look for your child’s sketchbook in their Navigation 101 binder during student lead conferences in November.
